I spend more time helping people with Hamtests.co.uk & hamradioforum.net than my own pursuits of that next elusive DXCC.

So have spent some time (and money) this week, trying to work K5D. But boy has it been tough.

To start with finding a place on the bands I can hear K5D. Usually I get static. The one time I can hear him he is working numbers. 5, 6, 7, 8 and that’s about an hour gone.

I also made a few purchases in case can try to work data as my setup wasn’t complete. From G4ZLP I ordered a Icom lead for my DigiMaster Comport, an Icom CI-V lead and a USB soundcard. All working great now, and good value at £31.47 ($45.50 approx) for the 3 items including delivery.

So hopefully with a few days left still of the K5D operation, I am still hopeful.

I also ordered (but not arrived) and CW key for my FT-817 & CW PC interface from BullDog iambic keys.

Finally sorted the blog out as an upgrade left the theme not working. Also my HRD (Ham Radio Deluxe) text thing stopped working.

This is now uploaded to my mini Linux server and the one file is served from there. It’s now proudly on display at the top of the page above the header image.

Also I have changed the theme to a simpler design and added a plug-in that should be better at caching the pages on both my blogs.

The Akismet logo showing how many spam comments had been blocked has also been disabled as a friend noticed this was slowing the loading of the site as well. Akismet itself is still enabled though.

I am in the middle of a few posts, and hopefully within a week or so should have some more stuff posted here.

Will be adding some photos soon from my short trip to Isle of Wight. Don’t think I took many, but I had fun drinking 3 out of 4 evenings with my Dad. I came back early as the day I was planning to return there was torrential rain. Glad I left early.

I know this is short, but hopefully next post will be a bit longer.

I have started on my next batch of Home Made Wine and tomorrow will be adding the finings and by Sunday should be ready to start bottling.

What else has been happening. Oh, I have rearranged my Computer desk as I now have a monitor stand with a pull out keyboard tray.

I am still watching Big Brother and what a twist this week having a Big Brother Africa contestant enter the house. Although I think that Gaetano’s first night was not the best it could have been calling Tania a Pig. But hopefully the housemates spirits should lift when Cameron returns later today.

I now have GPRS on my 7650 switched on. I am on Vodafone Pay as you Go tariff and found out I could get this. When they switched on I could get to work all through yesterday. So when I got home I checked out their web site and they could send me the GPRS settings which finally worked. Only thing (which I noticed fairly quickly so didn’t lose loads of credit) is you are charged more for viewing Non-Vodafone Live sites (0.73p per Kb) than Vodafone Lives sites (0.1p per Kb).

So if I am surfing the Net and may be a while will be cheaper (a lot cheaper) to use Dial-up than GPRS although a lot slower. Maybe one day the price will come down again. I can always live in hope.
